Computational Geomorphology online workshop – 7th and 8th November 2023

Today, I like to announce an upcoming event which, I believe, will be of great interest to readers of this blog. Below is the information shared by the organizers Fiona Clubb and Stuart Grieve:

The 2-day online event on Reproducibility, Big Data, and Data Sharing in Geomorphology will take place on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th November 2023. The aim of the event is to establish a community of practice around reproducible computational research in geomorphology, starting with a two-day Zoom workshop providing training, discussion, and networking opportunities for geomorphologists from a diverse range of career stages and backgrounds.

The workshop will take the form of a keynote talk and brainstorming sessions around 4 key themes:

  • Theme 1: Big data in geomorphology. Keynote speaker: Dr. Giulia Sofia, University of Connecticut
  • Theme 2: Data sharing and the environmental costs of computation. Keynote speaker: Dr. Odin Marc, Géosciences Environnement Toulouse
  • Theme 3: Best practices in topographic analysis. Keynote speaker: Dr. Wolfgang Schwanghart, University of Potsdam
  • Theme 4: Making numerical modelling reproducible. Keynote speaker: Dr. Nicole Gasparini, Tulane University

Registration is free and open to geomorphologists across all career stages. We have financial support available for attendees, including costs to cover childcare or other caring responsibilities. The deadline for registration is 20th October 2023, but early registration is encouraged to secure a spot. Please click here to register.

Following the completion of the workshop, we plan to compile the ideas taken from discussion sessions into a position paper. All participants in the workshop will be invited to co-author this paper, which we aim to publish in a suitable open access journal.
